Biometric systems work with the principle of physical or behavioral characteristic that the person has, that he can not change and is used to identify him. The important advantages of the systems using human brain methods to identify a person and to distinguish from others are:
The user must be present at the place of identification.
He doesn’t have to carry an identification card or similar things.
He doesn’t have to memorize pass codes or PIN codes.
Widely used biometric systems are fingerprint identification, iris identification, hand and face identification systems. It is very important that the system to be chosen is integrated with the Access Control and Close Circuit TV System.
Iris Identification Systems
In human body iris is the only organ that does not change from the 16th month of birth to the death. This feature and the ease of measuring iris with high sensitivity make the iris identification system more reliable than the other systems. Every iris is unique. The possibility of having same iris code in two persons is 1/1078. Although DNA structure of single egg twins is the same, their iris codes are different. Fingerprint algorithms offer 30 distinctive features, whereas iris offers 266 distinctive features not including the color of the eye.
Iris Identification Systems whose international license belongs to Iridian Technologies Company has proved its leadership in the world. Irisaccess Iris Identification System can handle an eye in proximity of 8 – 48 centimeters. A standard black & white video camera scans the iris and provides enough information about the identification of the person. The system is not affected by past and present illnesses, getting smaller or bigger of eye-hole, and can work with eye glasses or contact lens. Operation rate is 1-2 seconds for each 100.000 IrisCode and no error has been encountered up to today.
Iris Identification System is used in United States in 20 prisons to identify the personnel, prisoners and visitors. In England, Japan and United States some banks use the Iris Identification System to identify the ATM users. The most effective use of the Iris Identification System is in the Shiphol Airport of Amsterdam. Instead of manual passport control IRIS technology is used, and Shiphol Airport of Amsterdam is the first airport using this system. In Turkey Yaysat, Koç Systems, Hacettepe University, 1. Army, İEM, EGM, Hobim Computer, Akbank, KoçNet ve some units of the Ministry of Justice use Iris Identification Systems.
